Eldridge Sherman began military service on 25 September 1861 at Ohio. At age 17 he enlisted for 3 years in Company G 55th Ohio Volunteer Infantry.2 He ended military service on 22 January 1864 at Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio. He was discharged after receiving a severe shoulder wound at Gettysburg PA in 1863.2
Eldridge Sherman applied for a Civil War military pension on 15 February 1864 Ohio.5
At age 23, Eldridge Sherman married Catherine Elizabeth Earl, age 21, daughter of Matthew Earl and Susannah Sifritt, on Tuesday, 23 April 1867 at Seneca County, Ohio.6
The 1870 US Census enumerated him as Eldridge Sherman (given age 26), the head of household Scipio Township, Seneca County, Ohio, on 30 July 1870. Francis Sherman (given age 25), Ferona Sherman (given age 22), Elnora Sherman (given age 17) and Lucinda Sherman (given age 12) were listed as household members.7
The 1880 US Census enumerated him as Eldridge Sherman (given age 36), the head of household at Clinton Township, Seneca County, Ohio, on 22 June 1880. Also living in the household were his wife, Catherine Sherman (given age 35), his son, William C. Sherman (given age 12), his daughter, Aura I. Sherman (given age 7) .8
Eldridge Sherman was elected to the office of Secretary of the Building Committee for the construction of the new Pleasant Ridge (Egberts) Church which was completed in 1890, and remains standing in 1999 at the corner of State Route 101 and CR 38 about 5 miles NE of Tiffin. Most of the early Seneca County Shermans attended this Methodist Church and many were buried there, and a number of their descendants are currently members. Eldridge was a very active member of the congregation having served many years as a trustee and as Sunday School Superintendent, in 1888.
The 1900 US Census enumerated him as Eldridge Sherman (given age 56), the head of household Clinton Township, Seneca County, Ohio, on 29 June 1900. Also living in the household was his wife, Catherine Sherman (given age 55), his sons, Earl J. Sherman (given age 16) and Ralph E. Sherman (given age 8) .9
The 1910 US Census enumerated him as Eldridge Sherman (given age 66), the head of household Clinton Township, Seneca County, Ohio, on 22 April 1910. Also living in the household were his wife, Catherine Sherman (given age 64), his son, Ralph E. Sherman (given age 19), his sister-in-law, Amanda Holtz (given age 69) . Eldridge was self employed as a Farmer.10 He was listed as the father of Ralph E. Sherman (given age 29) on the 1920 Census recorded 13 January 1920 Clinton Township, Seneca County, Ohio.11
Eldridge died on 17 April 1926 Clinton Township, Seneca County, Ohio, at age 82 leaving Catherine Elizabeth as a widow.1 Eldridge Sherman was buried on Tuesday, 20 April 1926 in the Egbert's Church Cemetery, located at Pleasant Township, Seneca County, Ohio.1
