     The 1870 US Census enumerated him as Joseph McCartney (given age 46), the head of household at Massillon Township, Cedar County, Iowa, on 20 August 1870. Laura J. McCartney (given age 32), Jacob McCartney (given age 7), Elisha Tanner (given age 24) and Ella Wakefield (given age 19) were listed as household members. Joseph was a Farmer and owned land valued at $3,600.⁸

     The 1885 Iowa State Census enumerated him as Joseph Mc Cartney (given age 60), the head of household Massillon Township, Cedar County, Iowa, in 1885. Lura J. Mc Cartney (given age 46) was listed as a household member.¹¹
     Joseph McCartney (given age 70) was listed as the head of a family on the 1895 Iowa State Census in 1895 at Clarence, Cedar County, Iowa.¹²
     The 1900 US Census enumerated him as Joseph McCartney (given age 76), the head of household at Dayton, Cedar County, Iowa, on 6 June 1900. Also living in the household was his wife, Lorie J. McCartney (given age 62) .¹³
     Joseph died on 4 March 1904 at Cedar County, Iowa, at age 79 leaving Laura June as a widow.¹ Joseph McCartney was buried in the Clarence Cemetery, located at Dayton Township, Cedar County, Iowa.^1,2
