     The 1850 US Census enumerated him as William T. Sherman (given age 30), the head of household living alone at Col. Bragg's Artillery near Jefferson Barracks, St. Louis County, Missouri, on 18 August 1850. William was employed as a 1st Lieutenant, U.S. Artillery.3
     The 1860 US Census enumerated him as W. T. Sherman (given age 40), the head of household at Lancaster, Fairfield County, Ohio, on 11 July 1860. Ellen B. E. Sherman (given age 35), Maria E. Sherman (given age 9), Mary E. Sherman (given age 7), William T. Sherman (given age 6), Thomas Ewing Sherman (given age 3) and Ellen Mary Sherman (given age 9 months) were listed as household members. W. was an Attorney at Law.4
     The 1870 US Census enumerated him as W. T. Sherman (given age 50), the head of household Washington, District of Columbia, on 16 June 1870. Elinore Sherman (given age 45), Maria Sherman (given age 19), M. E. Sherman (given age 17), Rachel Sherman (given age 8) and P. T. Sherman (given age 3) were listed as household members. W. was employed as a General in the U.S. Army.5
     The 1880 US Census enumerated him as W. T. Sherman (given age 60), the head of household at 15th Street North West, Washington, District of Columbia, on 7 June 1880. Also living in the household were his wife, Eleanor E. Sherman (given age 55), his son, Phileum T. Sherman (given age 13), his daughters, Mary E. Sherman (given age 27), Rachel E. Sherman (given age 18) and Eleanor Thackara (given age 20), his son-in-law, Alex M. Thackara (given age 31) . W. was employed as a General in the U.S. Army.6
     William Tecumseh died on 14 February 1891 at New York City, New York County, New York, at age 71.
     William Tecumseh Sherman (February 8, 1820 – February 14, 1891) was an American soldier, businessman, educator, and author. He served as a General in the Union Army during the American Civil War (1861–65), for which he received recognition for his outstanding command of military strategy as well as criticism for the harshness of the "scorched earth" policies that he implemented in conducting total war against the Confederate States. Military historian Basil Liddell Hart famously declared that Sherman was "the first modern general".
     Sherman served under General Ulysses S. Grant in 1862 and 1863 during the campaigns that led to the fall of the Confederate stronghold of Vicksburg on the Mississippi River and culminated with the routing of the Confederate armies in the state of Tennessee.      In 1864, Sherman succeeded Grant as the Union commander in the western theater of the war. He proceeded to lead his troops to the capture of the city of Atlanta, a military success that contributed to the re-election of President Abraham Lincoln. Sherman's subsequent march through Georgia and the Carolinas further undermined the Confederacy's ability to continue fighting. He accepted the surrender of all the Confederate armies in the Carolinas, Georgia, and Florida in April 1865.
     When Grant became president, Sherman succeeded him as Commanding General of the Army (1869–83). As such, he was responsible for the conduct of the Indian Wars in the western United States. He steadfastly refused to be drawn into politics and in 1875 published his Memoirs, one of the best-known firsthand accounts of the Civil War.7

     The 1900 US Census enumerated him as Thom. E. Sherman (given age 43), the head of household St. Ignatious Colege, located at Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, on 11 June 1900, living alone. Thom. was employed as a Clergyman.4
     The 1910 US Census enumerated him as Thomas E. Sherman (given age 53), the head of household at Valley Road, Township I, Santa Barbara County, California, on 29 April 1910. Also living in the household were . Thomas was employed as a Priest of a Religious Order.5
     Thomas Ewing died of a hemorrhage of the stomach on 29 April 1933 at New Orleans, Orleans Parish, Louisiana, at age 76. He asked for a Jesuit priest to come and renewed his own vows as a Jesuit by memory. That evening he passed away peacefully. He was buried in the Jesuit Cemetery, located at Grand Coteau, St. Landry Parish, Louisiana.
