The 1880 US Census enumerated him as Samuel A. Sherman (given age 58), the head of household at Mabel Street, Killingly, Windham County, Connecticut, on 12 June 1880. Also living in the household were his wife, Lucy A. Sherman (given age 60), his daughter, May E. Sherman (given age 22) . Samuel was employed as a Wheel Wright.6
