Elbridge Wilkins was born in June 1826 at Shrewsbury, Worcester County, Massachusetts.
At age 29, Elbridge Wilkins married Susan Jane Newton, age 30, daughter of Calvin Newton Jr. and Patty Rice, on Tuesday, 18 December 1855 Shrewsbury, Worcester County, Massachusetts.1
The 1860 US Census enumerated him as Elbridge Wilkins (given age 34), the head of household at Marlborough, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, on 24 August 1860. Susan Wilkins (given age 35) was listed as a household member. Elbridge was employed as a Carpenter.2
Elbridge Wilkins began military service on 8 July 1862. He enlisted in the 9th Battery Massachusetts Volunteers. He served in Virginia during this war, but escaped all wounds and severe illness. During the war he saw Lincoln, meeting him in the White House in Washington and like all who have looked upon the face of Honest Abe, he was greatly impressed with his nobility of character and his sincerity of purpose.3 He ended military service on 9 June 1865.3
The 1870 US Census enumerated him as Elbridge Wilkins (given age 46), the head of household Marlborough, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, on 26 July 1870. Susan Wilkins (given age 46) and Frederic E. Wilkins (given age 3) were listed as household members. Elbridge was employed as a Carpenter.4
The 1880 US Census enumerated him as Elbridge Wilkins (given age 53), the head of household Marlborough, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, on 14 June 1880. Also living in the household were his wife, Susan Wilkins (given age 55), his son, Fred E. Wilkins (given age 13) . Elbridge was employed as a Carpenter.5
The 1900 US Census enumerated him as Elbridge Wilkins (given age 73), the head of household at 84 Church Street, Marlborough, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, on 5 June 1900. Also living in the household was his wife, Susan Wilkins (given age 74). Elbridge was employed as a Carpenter.6
Elbridge died of cerebal hemorrhage on 16 September 1909 at 82 Church Street, Marlborough, Essex County, Massachusetts, at age 83 leaving Susan Jane as a widow.1
Elbridge's obituary appeared on 18 September 1909, in the The Daily Enterprise, published at Marlborough, Essex County, Massachusetts. As listed in the obituary, Elbridge was survived by.3 He was buried in the Rock Lawn Cemetery, located at Marlborough, Essex County, Massachusetts.
