At age 21, Otis Ashley married Sarah A. Mathers, age 16, daughter of James Mathers and Sarah Clark, on Wednesday, 29 December 1841 at Plainfield, Will County, Illinois.2,1
Otis Ashley relocated at Zyante Valley, Santa Cruz County, California, on 13 March 1847. He helped to build three sawmills on the San Lorenzo River.1,2
Otis Ashley relocated at San Jose, Santa Clara County, California, in 1848.1,2
The 1852 California State Census enumerated him as Otis Ashley (given age 32), the head of household at Santa Clara County, California, on 18 October 1852. Sarah Ashley (given age 27), Sarah M. Ashley (given age 4) and Orrin Ashley (given age 1) were listed as household members. Otis was self employed as a farmer.3
Otis Ashley relocated Santa Cruz County, California, in June 1856. He returned to Zyante Valley, settled on a piece of government land on the west side of the Zyante Rancho, and built a saw mill.1,2
The 1860 US Census enumerated him as Otis Ashley (given age 30), the head of household at Santa Cruz Township, Santa Cruz County, California, on 21 July 1860. Sarah Ashley (given age 30), Mary Ashley (given age 14), Gideon Ashley (given age 6) and Ellen Ashley (given age 6 months) were listed as household members. Otis was self employed as a farmer.4
The 1870 US Census enumerated him as Otis Ashley Jr. (given age 50), the head of household Santa Cruz Township, Santa Cruz County, California, on 18 August 1870. Sarah A. Ashley (given age 45), Major G. Ashley (given age 15), Albert Ashley (given age 12), Walter O. Ashley (given age 10) and Sarah M. Clarke (given age 50) were listed as household members. David Kent (given age 27) was listed as his neighbor. Otis was the owner of a saw mill.5
The 1880 US Census enumerated him as Otis Ashley (given age 60), the head of household at San Lorenzo, Santa Cruz County, California, on 25 June 1880. Also living in the household were his wife, Sarah A. Ashley (given age 56), his sons, Major G. Ashley (given age 24), Albert Ashley (given age 22) and Walter Ashley (given age 20) . Otis was self employed as a lumberman.6
To quote his own language: "My occupation at that time was lumbering and defending a long and tedious lawsuit, with the alleged owners of the Zyante Rancho, which lasted twenty years. I succeeded in saving about two thousand acres for the government, but by so doing lost my place, and the proceeds of twenty years' hard labor. Other people are now enjoying the benefit of it, and I am a poor man, still working for a living." He was listed as the father of Albert O. Ashley (given age 42) on the 1900 Census recorded 1 June 1900 at San Lorenzo Township, Santa Cruz County, California.7
Otis died on 15 March 1904 at Santa Cruz County, California, at age 83.1

Also living in the household was, his mother, Sarah A. Ashley (given age 75), his father, Otis Ashley (given age 79), his nephew, William W. Ashley (given age 8) . Albert was employed as a teamster.4
The 1910 US Census enumerated him as Albert O. Ashley (given age 52), the head of household at San Lorenzo Road, Felton Township, Santa Cruz County, California, on 16 April 1910. At age 23, Walter Orson Ashley married first Anne Elizabeth Harmon, age 18, daughter of Leonard Spaulding Harmon and Augusta Elizabeth Longfellow, on Tuesday, 1 January 1884 Felton, Santa Cruz County, California.1
His wife, Anne, died on 30 July 1891 Felton, Santa Cruz County, California, at age 26, leaving Walter Orson as a widower.1

Also living in the household was his wife, Mary Ashley (given age 46). Walter was employed as a motorman for a street car company.5
The 1920 US Census enumerated him as Walter O. Achley (given age 59), the head of household at 636 18th Street, Oakland, Alameda County, California, on 7 January 1920. Also living in the household was his wife, Mamie A. Achley (given age 56). Walter was employed as a motorman for a car company.6
Walter Orson died on 17 November 1925 at Oakland, Alameda County, California, at age 65 leaving Mary as a widow.1 Walter Orson Ashley was buried in the Mountain View Cemetery, located at Oakland, Alameda County, California.1
