He served as a Private in Captain Joseph McNall's company, in a regiment commanded by Lieuenant Colonel Samuel Peirce.5 He served in the military on 9 July 1780 at Shrewsbury, Worcester County, Massachusetts. He was a under command of Lieut. Jackson, of the artillery.6,5 He ended military service on 11 December 1780 Shrewsbury, Worcester County, Massachusetts. Marriage banns for Maj. Calvin Newton Sr. and Elizabeth Keyes were published on 4 October 1786 Shrewsbury, Worcester County, Massachusetts.2,7,1,8
At age 24, Maj. Calvin Newton Sr. married Elizabeth Keyes, age 23, daughter of Elisha Keyes and Katherine Baker, on Tuesday, 16 January 1787 Shrewsbury, Worcester County, Massachusetts.1,9,3
The 1790 US Census enumerated him as Calvin Newton, the head of household Shrewsbury, Worcester County, Massachusetts, on 2 August 1790. Based on ages, it is possible that the following were also living in the household:.10

The 1800 US Census enumerated him as Calvin Newton (given age 26-44), the head of household at Newfane, Windham County, Vermont, on 4 August 1800. Based on ages, it is possible that the following were also living in the household:. Marshall Newton (given age 26-44) was listed as a neighbor.11
