The 1880 US Census enumerated her as Margaret Mathers (given age 50), the head of household at San Simeon Township, San Luis Obispo County, California, on 2 June 1880. Also living in the household were, her sons, Alonzo Mathers (given age 30), Newton Mathers (given age 23) and Wallace Mathers (given age 20), her daughters, Lucy Mathers (given age 15) and Celia C. Safely (given age 26) .4
Margaret died on 23 November 1894 at Cambria, San Luis Obispo County, California, at age 67.1 Margaret's obituary appeared in November 1894, in the SLO Tribune, published at San Luis Obispo, San Luis Obispo County, California. It reads:
Matthews-on the head of San Simeon Creek, Mrs. Margaret Matthews, aged 69 years, and the mother of Mrs. Celia Saffly, Lucy, Alonzo, Wallace and Newton Matthews. She was buried in the Cambria Cemetery, located at Cambria, San Luis Obispo County, California. Her tombstone inscription reads: Margaret Mathers, Died Nov 23, 1894, Aged 67 years.

But 'tis God thou has bereft us,
He can all our sorrows heal.

His wife, Minerva, died on 16 September 1924 at Pennington County, South Dakota, at age 26, leaving George Wininger as a widower.7
