Dennis Darling was a witness when Jonathan Thayer was at a court appearance on 27 October 1686 at Worcester County, Massachusetts. The court report reads as follows:
Jonathan Thayer of Mendon being in the bond of matrimony, Convicted by his own Confession of Committing fornication with his Servant maid Sarah Darling,
the court Considered his offense and sentence him to stand tomorrow on the 28 instant at three of the clock afternoon for the space of an hour upon the Cage in Boston with a paper on his breast with this inscription. Viz, A married man for committing fornication in his own house with his Servant maid & afterwards to be whippd on the naked back with thirty stripes or to pay twenty pounds in money as a fine to his Majesty, and to give bond of thirty pounds for his appearance at his Majesty's next Court of Sessions of the Peace to be holden in Boston on the last
Monday in January next then & there to Answer such Charges as the Court shall See Good to award him for maintenance of the Child....
