     James Hale Newton was born on Friday, 13 January 1832 at Hubbardston, Worcester County, Massachusetts, son of James and Esther (Hale) Newton.1,2 He graduated from Dartmouth College at Hanover, Grafton County, New Hampshire, in 1859.1
     At age 31, James Hale Newton married Susan Wadsworth Taft, daughter of Calvin Taft and Eliza M. (?), on Monday, 23 November 1863.1
     James Hale Newton was issued a U.S. Passport on 6 June 1884 at Hampden County, Massachusetts.2
     The 1900 US Census enumerated him as James Newton (given age 68), the head of household at 159 Chestnut Street, Holyoke, Hampden County, Massachusetts, on 4 June 1900. Also living in the household was his wife, Susan Newton (given age 58), his sons, Fred H. Newton (given age 34) and Herbert J. Newton (given age 24), his daughter, Lila J. Newton (given age 33) . James was employed as a Manufacturer.3
     His wife, Susan, died on 3 August 1900 Holyoke, Hampden County, Massachusetts, leaving James Hale as a widower.4,1
     At age 72, James Hale Newton married second Emily Norcross, age 44, daughter of Warren Fisher Norcross and Emily Colburn, on Wednesday, 29 June 1904.1
     The 1910 US Census enumerated him as James H. Newton (given age 78), the head of household at 399 Northampton Street, Holyoke, Hampden County, Massachusetts, on 19 April 1910. Also living in the household were his wife, Emily Newton (given age 51) , a servant, Anna Judge (given age 28). James was employed as a Paper Manufacturer at a Paper Mill.5
     The 1920 US Census enumerated him as James H. Newton (given age 88), the head of household at 1766 Northampton Street, Holyoke, Hampden County, Massachusetts, on 21 January 1920. Also living in the household were his wife, Emily N. Newton (given age 60) , servants, Mary Foran (given age 27) and Catherine Foran (given age 29). James was a retired Manufacturer.6
     James Hale died say 1921 leaving Emily as a widow.
