Joseph Rice was born in 1637.1 He was baptized on 13 March 1637/38 at Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, England.2
At age 20, Joseph Rice married first Mercy King, age 19, daughter of Dea. Thomas King and Anne Collins, on Saturday, 4 May 1658 at Sudbury, Middlesex County, Massachusetts Bay Colony, British America, (now Massachusetts).1
His wife, Mercy, died on 4 January 1668/69 at Marlborough, Middlesex County, Massachusetts Bay Colony, British America, (now Massachusetts), at age 29, leaving Joseph as a widower.2
Joseph Rice married second Martha (?).
There is some uncertainty about whether Mercy King died soon after her marriage to Joseph or whether she is the Martha Rice, wife of Joseph, who appears in the Marlborough vital records as having died on 4 January 1668. Ward lists both Mercy King and Martha (?) as wives of Joseph. The Rice Genealogical Register lists only wife Mercy King and takes the death record on 4 January 1668 to be that of Mercy King. There is no mention of a marriage between Joseph Rice and Martha (Eames) in the Sudbury vital records. On the other hand, the birth records of Joseph's first four children all list the mother as Martha.

Joseph Rice married third Mary Beers in 1670 Sudbury, Middlesex County, Massachusetts Bay Colony.1
His wife, Mary, died on 13 May 1677 at Watertown, Middlesex County, Massachusetts Bay Colony, British America, (now Massachusetts), at age 34, leaving Joseph as a widower.2
At age 39, Joseph Rice married fourth Sarah Prescott on Tuesday, 22 February 1677/78 at Dedham, Essex, England.1
Joseph died on 23 December 1711 at Stow, Middlesex County, Province of Massachusetts Bay, British America, (now Massachusetts), at age 73.1,2
