Henry McCartney (III) circa 1845 (possibly)
Henry McCartney (III) was born on Saturday, 30 August 1823 at Geneva, Ontario County, New York.1 He was probably included as a free white male, age five to ten years old, in the household of Henry McArty (given age 30-40) on the 1830 Census on 1 June 1830 at Scipio Township, Seneca County, Ohio.2 Henry McCartney (III) was probably included as a free white male, age fifteen to twenty years old, in the household of Henry McCartney (given age 40-50) on the 1840 Census on 1 June 1840 Scipio Township, Seneca County, Ohio.3,4
In the will of Henry McCartney (II) dated 8 February 1842, Henry McCartney (III) was named as an heir.5,6
Henry McCartney (III) began military service on 20 June 1846 at New Albany, Floyd County, Indiana. He enlisted for a period of 12 months as a Private in Captain McLane's Company, 1st Regiment, Indiana Infantry. This organization subsequently became Company E, 1st Regiment, Indiana Infantry.7 He served in the military during the Mexican War. (The National Archives and Records Administration has no record of Henry McCartney serving in the Mexican War from Ohio; however they did provide the Indiana record cited here. We believe that Henry travelled from Seneca County, Ohio to New Albany, Indiana (across the Ohio River from Louisville, Kentucky) and enrolled there.).8,7,9 He ended military service on 9 September 1846 at New Orleans, Orleans Parish, Louisiana. He was discharged at the mouth of the Rio Grande in Texas on a Surgeon's Certificate of Disability by order of Colonel J. P. Drake.7
Henry McCartney (III) died possibly New Orleans, Orleans Parish, Louisiana. (This location may be based upon the Muster-out Roll of Company E, 1st Regiment, Indiana Infantry, dated New Orleans, Louisiana, June 16th, 1847. However the Remarks section of that record detail his discharge in Texas, as above.).8,7
Initial research surveys have turned up no additional information about him.

Research Note: The accompanying picture, provided by Ann (McCartney) Shaddock, is labeled Henry McCartney grand father of Wm H. McCartney. That text would make the subject Henry (II); however we believe it is more likely Henry (III); he probably sat for the portrait at the age of ~24, before going off to fight in the Mexican War.
