     John Willard Sherman began military service on 28 August 1900 at Providence, Providence County, Rhode Island. He was enlised in Company K of the 4th regiment, 21st Infantry.⁵ He ended military service on 27 August 1903 at Fort Keogh near Custer County, Montana. He served in the Spanish-American War. His conduct in the army was noted as Very Good.⁵

Also living in the household were his wife, Emily Sherman (given age 22), his daughter, Ellen M. Sherman (given age 1 year, 11 months) . John was employed as a Candy Wholesaler.⁹ He fathered a child, Robert Sherman, who was born say 1911.⁶ John Willard Sherman fathered a child, Mary F. Sherman, who was born on Wednesday, 27 November 1912.^6,10
     The 1915 Rhode Island State Census enumerated him as Willard Sherman (given age 32), the head of household at East Providence, Providence County, Rhode Island, on 15 April 1915. Also living in the household were his wife, Emily Sherman (given age 28), his daughter, Helen Sherman (given age 5) .¹¹ John Willard Sherman fathered a child, Willard Foster Sherman, who was born on Monday, 9 August 1915 Rhode Island.^6,7

     The 1840 US Census enumerated him as Seth Keeler (given age 40-50), the head of household Norwalk, Huron County, Ohio, on 1 June 1840. Based on ages, it is possible that the following were also living in the household: , Sophia Keeler, a free white female age forty to fifty years old.⁴
     The 1850 US Census enumerated him as Seth Kuler (given age 55), the head of household at Norwalk Township, Huron County, Ohio, on 9 August 1850. Sophia Kuler (given age 41), Amanda Kuler (given age 18), Laura Kuler (given age 14), Emily Kuler (given age 12), Alonzo Kuler (given age 8), Clarke Kuler (given age 4) and Malissa Kuler (given age 2) were listed as household members.⁵
