CLARK WAGGONER
Died Thursday Afternoon at Toledo Hospital
Resided in Fremont back in the Forties and Was a Pioneer Journalist of North-Western Ohio -- Well Known as a Political Writer.

Clark Waggoner, one of the ablest writers Toledo has ever known, a historian and journalist fo national reputation and one of the shinign lights in the political and literary history of the ciry for over half a century, passed away at the Toledo hospital yesterday afternoon, says the Toledo Times. Stricken with paralysis last fall, Mr. Waggoner's strength has been gradually undermined until three weeks ago, when his collapse was complete, and in order that he might have constant medical care, was taken to the hospital, but he never recovered from his last fatal shock and slowly, but surely the sand of life ran out. A staunch and true figure throughour the tarnished fights of political strife, Mr Waggoner was an example of honesty and fearlessness, and wile hi aggressiveness was feared his fairness was never questioned. The greater portion of his industrious life was spent in the editorial chair and in this particular vocation his fame gradually burst through the pale of local glory into the realms of national prominence.
Clark Waggoner was born in Milan township, Erie county, O., and was a son of Israel Waggoner and Lucretia (Buck) Waggoner. His parents were among the earliest settlers of northern Ohio, the father having come to Ohio from New Jersey in 1811 and the mother from Vermont in 1815. On December 29, 1841 Mr. Waggoner was married at Fremont to Miss Sylvia B. Roberts daughter of Chauncey Roberts, and to them five children were born, of whom four now survive: Ralph H., of New York; J. Frederick, in Chicago; Mrs. Carrie W. Seward, of Lansing, Mich, and Miss Mary Ella, of this city. Miss Fanny died in Toledo June 1, 1888.
Mr. Waggoner had a long and honored career as a newspaper man, and probably wielded more influence with his papers than any other newspaper man in Ohio. He began his newspaper career b learning the printer's trade. Upon completing his trade in 1839 he went to Fremont (then known as Lower Sandusky) where he started the Lower Sandusky Whig, which he conducted until 1843, when he went to Milan. There he established the Milan Tribune with the Clarion at Sandusky and started the Sandusky Register.
It was in 1856 that Mr. Waggoner first entered the Toledo newspaper field, whe, with Gideon T. Stewart, of Norwalk, he purchased the The Blade. Mr. Waggoner then became the editor of that paper and continued in that capacity until August, 1865. In 1866, Mr. Waggoner with his son, Ralph H., putchased the Toledo Commercial, which he conducted until 1876 when he retired from the newspaper business.
One of the most notable of Mr. Waggoner's works while in the newspapaer business was to bring about the nomination for governer of Rutherford B. Hayes for the third time in 1875. At that time the sentiment of the greater majority of the newspapers of the state were favoring the nomination of Hon. Alphonzo Taft, of Cincinnati. Judge Taft, however, favored a division of teh school funds, which Mr. Waggoner did not like, and Mr Waggoner took up a campaign for Rutherford B. Hayes who was finally nominated by acclamation. It is believed also that Mr. Waggoner brought Justice M. R. Waite to the front.
The only political office held by Mr. Waggoner was that of collector of internal revenues in this district under President Hayes.1

Clark's obituary appeared on 9 July 1903, in the Fremont Weekly Journal, published at Fremont, Sandusky County, Ohio. As listed in the obituary, Clark was survived by, his wife, Sylvia B. Roberts, his sons, Ralph H. Waggoner and J. Frederick Waggoner, his daughters, Caroline Seward and Mary Ella Waggoner.1
